Angie’s Burger Bar at St Winnow

Home made burgers next to Poldark’s church…

This is the sort of thing you come to Cornwall for, and is one of our favourite Small Adventures. At the limit of navigation on the Fowey River, between Lostwithiel and Lerryn — lies one of the most beautiful and rustically authentic hidden corners of the county — St Winnow.

A small quay dating back to Tudor times, a picturesque fifteenth century church right on the waterside… And right there, by the church gate— just when you were feeling ready for a little something after your walk along the riverside from Lerryn — a perfect little burger bar.

But wait, it just keeps getting better… Angie’s Kiosk sells the most splendid burgers made with home reared meat, in a proper bun. Home baked cakes. Local ice cream. All served on proper plates with cutlery. No Styrofoam or plastic to be seen. There’s nice wooden tables and chairs to sit at while you chomp your nosh and love the view.

And we haven’t even mentioned the museum yet. While you are waiting for your burger to be cooked, wander into the old barn crammed with an amazing array of restored farm tools and machinery. Whether you like this sort of thing or not, it’s fascinating — have a look. No guide. No charge. Just have a mooch about.

Angie’s is open in the spring and summer months, generally that means March to October. Six days a week. Opening sort of around eleven thirty (ish). Take cash.

Then there’s the walk. If you are up for a few miles on a woodland path along the riverside, you can start in Lerryn, and work up an appetite hiking alongside the river through Ethy woods to St Winnow. There are a few steep-ish inclines and muddy places, but the path is generally well maintained. At a reasonable pace it takes about an hour and a half.

If you fancy the walk, park in the car park at Lerryn. The walk starts on the opposite bank. At low tide you can cross on the stepping stones, then turn left and just follow the path. At high tide, walk up to the road bridge, then go up the hill a little way and take a left turn between the houses to find the path. There’s a fine little general store and deli you will pass on the way into the village.

One more thing for rippling pecs fans — the church was a setting in the filming of the original 1970s Poldark, for the wedding of Dwight Enys and Caroline Penvenon.

HOW TO GET THERE:

If you are doing the walk from Lerryn, drive from Lanreath towards Bodinnick. A few hundred yards past the big wind turbine, take the right turn signposted Lerryn. Turn right at the T Junction when you get to the village, then left after The Ship pub to the car park.
