The Walk From Lerryn to St Winnow

A beer at the start, homemade burger at the end — lovely…

This is a splendid excursion with a crabbing bucket full of delightful possibilities.

The secret surprise is Angie’s home-made burger bar at the end of the walk. It is only open in season, so have a look at the post on the Burger Bar at St Winnow so you can check if it’s likely to be open.

Lerryn has a cute little shop, so you could plan not to need to go anywhere else today, and get what you need for this evening’s meal back at Frieda and the Moon. There is also an authentic old Cornish pub, The Ship, so if you are really up for the full experience, you could drop in for a pint or two at the end of your walk.

If the tide is out, you will see the stepping stones straight from the car park across the river. When you arrive at the opposite bank turn left and keep walking till you get to St Winnow. If the tide is in, you will need to walk up through the village to the bridge, and turn left about 30 yards up the hill between the houses, to arrive at the same place.

The walk is mainly level, with a few inclines, and can be muddy in places. Avoiding unnecessary exertion (you are, after all, on holiday), it will still take less than 2 hours. Just follow the path, which follows the creek to the main river, and thence to your destination. If in doubt you should have the water on your left and the woodland on your right.

By the time you’re finished, you will have had a slightly scary river crossing, a nice walk, a burger, a cake, and a few beers. Maybe a packet of crisps. Nothing not to like there…

HOW TO GET THERE: From Lanreath follow the sign towards Bodinnick,Polruan. After a few miles, take a right turn about 200 yards past the big wind turbine on the right. Keep following this road and you’ll come to a T-junction in Lerryn, turn right, past the Ship pub on your left, and then turn left to the car park. Then see the instructions above.
