Today’s catch from the Looe Day Boats…

One large cold-cabinet heaving with freshly caught fish and seafood. That’s it. A simple thing — but what a pleasurable antidote to modern-day shopping.

Looe day boats use small-scale traditional methods, so their catch is the best of Cornish sustainable fishing, and not because of contemporary constraints, but because it’s always been like that, it’s how they do it round here.

In this tiny shop is everything you need to make a glorious meal — a few carefully selected veg, fresh herbs, some delicatessen things. We bought some beautiful pink-tinged hake, a sauce to cook it in, fresh parsley, and a pot of samphire — flavours of the sea indeed. The nice people will fillet your fish for you on request.

This is Food Yards not Food Miles — moored alongside the shop, you will see the day boats that caught your fish this morning — and the sheds where the fish is sorted and put on ice are just next door.

Which all adds up to a fresh burst of quality of life for you and me.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Park in the main Looe car park over the bridge, alongside the river. Walk towards the town and out of the pointy end of the car park. Go past Quayside Fresh and you’ll see Pengelly’s about 30 yards on the right.
